Handmade in Africa
AYAM Africa is a socially conscious jewelry brand, designing and delivering pieces from the heart of Africa. Our striking collections reflect the beauty and culture of traditional African adornment with a modern edge.
We use a variety of raw materials - recycled glass & metals, ethically sourced cow horn and bone, antique trade beads, wax cast brass and indigenous seeds. All materials are sourced from across Africa and every piece is a unique design collaboration with local Kenyan artisans, crafted by hand in home-based family workshops in Nairobi.
Each maker that we work with has been on the journey of AYAM Africa for over 30 years. It all started with the making of the traditional local costumes for the film 'Out of Africa'. For the film, Elizabeth (AYAM Founder) researched the pieces of the era through the Kenya Museum Society. Each tribal groups jewelry was carefully duplicated in the attire of the time and it was this that led to her love of working with the local artisans, and later together as a team to make the Jewelry of AYAM.
